Station 5 — Bedroom and intimacy
You now enter the bedroom, the most intimate space in the house. Carved wooden bed, mosquito net essential under the equatorial climate, a small domestic altar.
The Creole bourgeois bedroom of the 1900s combines sleep, private prayer, and sometimes the early education of young children.
The sacred is everywhere present: official Catholicism, but also popular syncretisms that mix European saints with African or Amerindian legacies.
Children learned their first prayers, first songs, first stories here. It is in such rooms that the Creole youth of Cayenne grew up, of whom Félix Éboué became the exemplary figure.
