📍 Central aisle, a few steps inside

What you see

Stop and look up. The nave rises to nearly thirty metres. It has double aisles on each side, giving the cathedral five parallel spaces, a rare layout. The walls carry almost nothing: the vaults rest on the pillars, and the freed space is given to glass. The cathedral keeps about 1,500 m² of stained glass, from the 13th to the 17th century. Above the entrance, the great organ came from Clairvaux Abbey, founded by Saint Bernard.

👨‍👩‍👧 For families

Stand in the middle of the aisle and look right up. Can you see the ribs crossing? They look like branches in a stone forest. And the stained glass: comic strips made of glass, telling stories to people who could not read.

✝️ What it says about faith

The word nave comes from the Latin navis, a ship: the community of believers travels together. The whole space points east, where the sun rises, an image of the risen Christ. The coloured light through the windows evokes the heavenly Jerusalem described in the Book of Revelation.
